In southern Pennsylvania is the physical halfway point of the trail

The halfway point is located in Pine Grove Furnace. The actual halfway point moves each year due to trail relocations.

The trail is not all hills. A twenty-six mile hike traverses across fields in the Cumberland Valley. Boiling Springs has an ATC office

Hawk Rock overlooks Duncannon

The Doyle Hotel is a living legend. It features interesting characters and cheap beer. If you didn’t eat your half gallon of ice cream to celebrate the halfway point, you can drink a half gallon of Yingling here.

North of Duncannon you hit the first of the “Pennsylvania Rocks”. The rocks slope at angles. From here on, the hills are flat (10 miles of little elevation change followed by 500 down and 500 up). The lack of climbing and descending may help you focus on the rocks.

This cast iron Waterville Bridge crossed the Little Pine Creek in 1890. It was moved for the AT to cross Swatara Creek.
